[Project Introduction]

The Northwest Literature and Art Troupe (now Shaanxi Song and Dance Troupe), which relocated from Yan'an to Xi'an in 1952, did not yet have a dedicated performance theater. With the support of the Cultural Committee of the Northwest Military and Political Commission at that time, we applied for a financial allocation of over 1 million yuan to rebuild a theater representing the cultural characteristics of New China on the former site of Chang'an Grand Theater on North Street.

In May 1954, the People's Theater, as the theater of the Northwest Art Troupe, was officially completed, and Duan Shaojia wrote the name of the theater. Northwest Architectural Design Company (now China Northwest Architectural Design Institute) is responsible for the design, while Shaanxi Third Construction Company undertakes the construction of the People's Theater project.

In 2003, the Shaanxi Provincial Development and Reform Commission invested 36 million yuan in a special fund for formal renovation. The Shaanxi Third Construction Company, which initially built the People's Theater, once again undertook a two-year rectification and repair task and completed it on schedule.

The theater currently has 1010 seats, over 500 basic lighting fixtures, and 480 controllable silicon dimming stations with circuits. The stage entrance is 7 meters high, 14 meters wide, and 22 meters deep. There are 5 horizontal and vertical curtains, 49 suspension rods, 2 surface lights, one group on each side of the slap and pillar lights, and 3 hanging cages for the north and south entrances and exits. The total area of the elevating music pool is 83.25 square meters, which can accommodate about 120 people. There are several backstage makeup rooms and clothing rooms. There are 2 VIP rooms of different sizes, as well as several conference tables, command desks, etc., fully meeting the needs of various professional performances and venue rentals.

Since its completion, Xi'an People's Theater has not only hosted important large-scale conferences of the provincial and municipal party and government over the years, but also made important and special contributions to timely promoting the party's line, principles, and policies in various periods. Major leaders of the party and the country, such as Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Chen Yi, Hu Yaobang, etc., have personally inspected and watched performances here. We have also hosted performances by hundreds of well-known art groups from five continents and almost all important art groups in China, building a bridge of communication and friendship between Chinese and foreign artists. At the same time, we have played a crucial role in popularizing various art varieties and cultural styles, enriching the leisure cultural life of the masses, and improving their artistic taste and appreciation ability. We have become an influential cultural performance venue in Northwest China and even across the country.
